Certain models of vehicles throughout history have proven to be so iconic that even as technology develops, engine modifications advance, and trends pass through cycles, they still preserve this larger-than-life, timeless aura. Obvious standouts are models such as the Ferrari F40, the Ford GT, the Lamborghini Countach, Chevrolet's Corvette, and let's not forget the ever-evolving Porsche 911. Growing up I had an appreciation for all of those cars, but they didn't hold a candle to the Toyota Land Cruiser. Ever since my father made me read Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton, where it describes the Land Cruiser as the most reliable vehicle to transport visitors into the dinosaur paddocks, I was obsessed. Hey, if it's durable enough for a Tyrannosaurus Rex safari, it's durable enough for my hunts. You can imagine my disappointment when the vehicles were cut from the movie and replaced with Ford Explorers. Damn it, Spielberg. Since the late 90s, it was a dream of mine to one day own one. And for a brief moment in 2021 it looked like my chances of owning a new one were ruined, when Toyota announced that the model would be discontinued in US markets. Perhaps a marketing ploy to spark consumer excitement, they nevertheless released a new model for 2024, and there was no chance I wasn't getting on that list. And after a year and half of waiting once my order was in, I got the call that it arrived from Tahara, Japan. While a turbocharged 4-cylinder doesn't exactly scream rugged muscle like the previous generations 5.7 Liter V8, the 2024 model boasts an impressive 465 ft-lb of torque, which will you get you where you're going faster than any of the previous models. The juxtaposition of appreciating the convenience and comfort of modern technology, whilst still constantly bitching about car manufactures not paying homage to the classics through simple utility, is something I am fairly guilty of. However, it seems Toyota has found the perfect marriage with this design, so maybe my bitching will stop. Before making a big purchase, I oftentimes ask myself, "What would Harry Selby do?". Frankly, I can see him in this model, cruising through Bechuanaland with his .416 Rigby, looking for his next adventure hunt, whether that be elephant or lion. There are few vehicles out there that beg to be tested in field, chasing and killing game. But that DNA is built directly into the new LC. Now if Toyota would just bring the Hilux back to the US, they could officially take all of my money. Thank you Toyota for the return of a legend. Long live the Land Cruiser.
